You have probably seen the thread. It shows up everywhere — neighbourhood apps, community groups, wherever people gather online to be outraged at each other. Kids on e-bikes, no helmets, machines that can do thirty miles an hour, weaving through traffic with nothing between their skulls and the pavement. The comments are predictable. Let kids be kids. Stop over-policing. It's their choice. It's a free country. The usual liturgy of personal liberty, recited with the confidence of people who have never had to say the words over a hospital bed.

I have seen this exact argument a hundred times, in a hundred different costumes. And I have noticed something about the people who make it. They are not consistent. The same person who insists that helmet laws are government overreach will, the moment a child in their own life is hurt, become the loudest voice in the room demanding that something be done. The same person who calls vaccine mandates tyranny will, the moment their own child is hospitalized with a preventable disease, ask why the government did not warn them. The same person who treats every gun regulation as an assault on freedom will, the moment a loaded firearm is found in a teenager's backpack, demand that we do something about the guns.
